Putting our feet up in front of the telly over Christmas, or going to the cinema inspires many of us to get packing to exciting holiday destinations, says the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA<.>). "When Hollywood uses exotic locations, interest in those areas can soar," says Ian Reynolds, ABTA Chief Executive.

Already, thanks to 'Lord of the Rings,' New Zealand Tourist Office's website has seen an increased number of hits and four tour operators have special 'Lord of the Rings' packages in anticipation of demand to see the home of 'Middle Earth'.

Earlier this year Jersey saw a huge demand from visitors wanting to discover its' mystic past, following the success of the Nicole Kidman film 'The Others' which was set on the island.

Viewers over the festive season, relaxed and relieved from the pressures of work and Christmas preparations will be spirited away to some tempting destinations.

Ian Reynolds continues: "The huge impact that films have on a holiday destination can not be underestimated. "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" and "The Beach" are excellent example of this, with the Greek Islands and Thailand seeing holidaymakers flock to their shores. Films and television programmes can be extremely effective in promoting specific destinations. This may also be why Tourism Office chiefs around the World are delighted when a film director chooses to set a film in their country."
