The Air Transport Association (ATA) announced that John M. Meenan has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. Meenan has held leadership positions within the association since joining the ATA general counsel`s staff in 1985, and has been involved in virtually all aspects of airline interaction with the government. Most recently, he has served as senior vice president for industry policy, overseeing industry economic analysis and public communications.

John Meenan is one of the top talents in the U.S. airline business, said ATA President and CEO James C. May. In his new position, he will be able to more effectively advance airline industry interests and meet the needs of our member airlines.

As EVP and COO, Meenan will have association-wide responsibilities to increase ATA`s focus on industry issues and improve service to our passenger and cargo airline members. He will continue to work directly with May and the ATA Board of Directors on major policy issues, as well as with the federal government on key aviation issues of national importance. Meenan will continue to maintain his involvement in industry environmental affairs, security and passenger and cargo facilitation, as well as the coordination of airport policy.

ATA is a service-driven organization that strives to promote the interests of the U.S. airline industry and to improve air service for the flying and shipping public, continued May. In his new role, John will help us maintain and improve air travel and meet the goal of ensuring that commercial aviation continues to be a vital component of the U.S. economy.

Before joining ATA, Meenan served nine years with the U.S. Secret Service, including two years as the agency`s acting chief counsel.

Meenan holds a J.D. degree with honors from Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., as well as a B.A. in political science from College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass.
