The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) has been elected to the 2003 Associations Advance America Honor Roll, a national awards competition sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). ASTA received the award for its leadership of the Flight Plan for America, a campaign of the ARC Escrow Fund Working Group.

ASTA is pleased to receive this recognition from the American Society of Association Executives. As part of the group that worked together to create the Flight Plan for America campaign, ASTA strived to spread the message of the importance of being prepared and using professional resources to plan a trip. We believe that the campaign`s goals – to reassure the travelling public about the commitment made to improve airline security and convenience, and to encourage travel – were successful, said ASTA President and CEO Richard M. Copland, CTC.

The Flight Plan for America, managed by ASTA, truly embodies the spirit of the Associations Advance America campaign. It is an honor and an inspiration to showcase this activity as an example of the many contributions associations are making to advance American society, said ASAE President Michael S. Olson, CAE.

The Associations Advance America awards program recognizes associations that propel America forward with innovative projects in education, skills training, standards-setting, business and social innovation, knowledge creation, citizenship and community service.

The Flight Plan for America campaign is a project of the ARC Escrow Fund Working Group, made up of representatives from ARC (Airlines Reporting Corp.), American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), Association of Retail Travel Agents (ARTA), Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines. Unveiled in March 2001, Flight Plan for America is a nationwide public interest campaign designed to educate the public about travel today, to encourage Americans to travel and to promote the use of professional travel resources.

Flight Plan for America combines several elements, such as a series of television and radio productions, including a public service announcement featuring Captain Jim Lovell, Commander of Apollo 13. These productions helped travelers understand what has been done to ensure their safety and garnered 276.8 million projected viewer and listener impressions. It also includes a Web site for travel professionals designed to help those in the travel industry educate clients and the general public.
