The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) extended its condolences to the people of Madrid and the country of Spain in the wake of the terrorist bombings in Madrid Thursday.

Our deepest sympathies go out to those who are suffering as a result of Thursday`s atrocity, said ASTA President and CEO Richard M. Copland, CTC. We stand in solidarity with the citizens of Spain. Americans stand with them in their fight against terrorism. Nations that stand for freedom cannot be blackmailed by the actions of a cowardly few.

Copland commended Spain`s King Juan Carlos I and Prime Minister José María Aznar for their determination that the country will not be swayed by terrorist threats and for their encouragement to citizens to continue with their daily lives. Copland also expressed concern that Americans not be intimidated from traveling abroad in the wake of Thursday`s bombings.

Travel is a cherished right of Americans and of the free world, a right that we will not let terrorists end, he said. As citizens of the world, we cannot let the idea that tomorrow will be better than today be undermined by the threat of terrorist attacks. It`s been said that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. No one knows that more than those of us in the travel industry. And so, through travel, we must hold fast to the promise of tomorrow and continue to reach out across the boundaries and break down the barriers of hatred and misunderstanding.

The mission of the American Society of Travel Agents and its affiliate organizations is to enhance the professionalism and profitability of members worldwide through effective representation in industry and government affairs, education and training, and by identifying and meeting the needs of the traveling public. The Society is the world`s largest and most influential travel trade association with more than 20,000 members in 140 countries.
