China’s beautiful Silk Road on display at Times Square 2017 New Year’s Eve countdown

This year, SAFA celebrated the Silk Road, which over 2,000 years ago opened the pathway to trade and cultural exchange between China and the western world.

NEW YORK – The art and culture of China's Silk Road was brought into the spotlight on New Year's Eve in New York City by the Sino-American Friendship Association, (SAFA), as Chinese performances took over the 2017 Times Square New Year's Eve count-down.

This year, SAFA celebrated the Silk Road, which over 2,000 years ago opened the pathway to trade and cultural exchange between China and the western world. Most notably, Marco Polo and others traveled these routes carrying silk and other commercial goods as well as igniting an international exchange of art, religion and technology which have all come to shape the world as we know it today.

As New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote in his greeting letter to SAFA: "Much like that ancient commerce network, the Association has also fostered international exchange and I am grateful for its efforts to enhance the cultural landscape of our global city and unite and entertain Chinese Americans and New Yorkers of all backgrounds."

With the support from the China National Tourist Office (CNTO) in New York, "Explore the Beauty of China along the Silk Road," was showcased to about 2 million people in Times Square as hundreds of millions more watched globally ahead of the New Year's Eve Countdown Celebration on Dec. 31, 2016.

Zhang, QiYue, Consul General of Consulate General of People's Republic of China, Peter Zhang, President of the Sino-American Friendship Association, Wang, YanJie, Director of China National Tourist Office as well as NY City Representative were in attendance. The event was hosted by Li, Li Executive Vice President and the well-known TV personality Allison Hagendorf.
