The International Air Transport Association (IATA<.>) and the World Tourism Organization (WTO<.>) have recently issued a joint publication General Guidelines for using Data on International Air-passenger Traffic for Tourism Analysis. Its objective is to help explain to a technical audience how useful information generated by international air passenger traffic can be for the purpose of analyzing tourism.

This type of data can be used to complement passenger arrival numbers with basic characteristics such as country of residence, visitor typology, purpose of trip, main type of accommodation used and main destination. This information is derived from administrative controls and the maintenance of comprehensive records of flight arrivals and departures.

This practical publication is not only directed at professionals in the statistical and marketing research fields. It is intended to meet the very different needs of as broad an audience as possible. The extensive IATA databank provides objective statistical information of an administrative nature on trends in the air travel industry – by airport, airline company, country and region. The WTO has long been a source of comparable information through its publications and on-line statistical database. The pooling of information from both sources can be invaluable in estimating the size and behaviour of the main tourist generating markets.

The report is rounded off with three chapters that contain a glossary of terms linked with tourism and air-traffic statistics, relevant IATA and WTO publications and a list of airports and airport authorities.
