Oliver Sutton, Editor in Chief of Swiss publication, Interavia, claimed the prize for the first Hank McGonagle ERA<.> Award for Journalistic Excellence. The winner was announced at the Awards Dinner, part of the General Assembly of the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) being held this week in Salzburg. The winning article, entitled: ‘Scope for a Better Deal for Regional Pilots?’ was published in the October 2001 edition of Interavia.

The introduction of the Award was announced by ERA director general, Mike Ambrose, at last year’s General Assembly in Athens. The Award is named after Hank McGonagle of GE Aircraft Engines who has been the principal advocate behind GE’s sponsorship of the media facilities at the General Assembly for many years. Prior to announcing the winner, Mike Ambrose commended the fighting spirit of Hank McGonagle who is currently seriously ill. He told me: ‘I am surrounded by Indians but their muskets are loaded!’

The aim of the Award is to encourage clear and objective reporting of the issues that shape the intra-European air transport industry and is intended as a mark of achievement.
