Greek local administrative officials visited Italy recently in an effort to gain know-how and exchange ideas on tourism planning and destination management.
Representatives from Corfu, Crete, Skiathos, Poros, Rhodes, Mykonos and Andros made the trip organised for a second consecutive year by the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises (
They visited several popular Italian destinations including Sorrento, Amalfi, Vietri and the islands of Capri and Ischia. The entire region is considered to share many similarities with Greece, combining cultural interest with a good climate. Each year, visitors numbering four to six times the region`s local population flock there. It operates year-round with significant occupancy rates.
The delegation noted cooperation, either institutional or informal, between the public and private sector at all destinations.
Furthermore, it pointed out that local authorities and local tourist enterprise associations had created an active organisation which made decisions on all tourism matters, and that these were binding.
However, despite the positive atmosphere of coordination, businessmen face difficulties in implementing the decisions in view of Italy`s large bureaucracy.
Italy`s local administration receives funding from regional authorities for infrastructure projects.
