The on-line travel agents training programme launched by the Malta Tourism Authority `s Frankfurt office in October 2004 continues to be a major tool which is helping to inform travel agents about Malta.

The set up of the training programme, found at www.maltaschulung.de, is in five stages and the charming Grandmaster mascot `Johnny Valletti` guides students through the various stages of the training, as well as giving them tests. Travel agents may register online for this training which is offered free of charge.

As of the end of January, the MTA training programme in Germany had 1600 registered students. A report in influential travel trade magazine `Travel One` reported that the Malta training programme is the most popular online training for foreign destinations amongst travel agents.

A popular feature of this site is the `expert chat` which is organised every three weeks, when a leading personality is available online for one hour to `chat` with the students. Tourism experts who have hosted this chat in the past few months include FTI CEO Dietmar Gunz, tour operator ITS Product Manager Petra Hendrix and Rupert Simoner from Kempinski San Lawrenz.

The first graduates of the training programme are to be announced soon and a presentation is planned for this month`s ITB fair in Berlin when Minister for Tourism Dr Francis Zammit Dimech and MTA Chairman Dr John C. Grech are to present prizes to the successful agents. A number of operators, hoteliers and other tourism suppliers, together with Air Malta, are sponsoring prizes for the successful graduates.
