A large number of speakers will be presenting papers at the International Institute for Peace through Tourism`s conference to be held on Saturday, 29 March 2003 at the Avillion Hotel Sydney. Five sessions, covering a broad range of topics related to peace through tourism will be presented and discussed under the conference theme: Tourism – Passport to Peace. Tourism New South Wales are a major sponsor of this conference.

The session topics are:

  • Role of the media in projecting images and influencing attitudes

  • The peace component in travel and tourism courses and programs

  • Sustainable Tourism

  • How best to get the peace message to the industry

Each of the sessions will have a panel of three or four speakers drawn mainly from the travel and tourism industry, educational institutions and IIPT members. Other presenters include Silvio Rivier, SBS TV producer and presenter of Global Village and Sham Ali, a director of the Grameen Bank and recently appointed by Foreign Minister, Jose Ramos Horta, to assist in the development of tourism in East Timor.

In addition to the wonderful range of invited speakers, the program format encourages audience participation and discussion, says Daphne Lowe Kelley, president of the Australia Chapter. The day has been planned with no long lectures or speeches but offers an opportunity to hear a range of speakers and points of view. Everyone is welcome to attend, she added.
