Millions of Britons to travel abroad this Christmas

Reports indicate that many Brits are planning to travel abroad during the holiday season. ABTA, a travel association, reported that four million people were intending to head overseas sometime between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Travelmatch is also reporting a surge in bookings. Alex Francis of the online travel specialist says: “Our customers are very interested in heading abroad at this time of year. The holidays are always a popular time to travel and this year’s figures are proving to be particularly strong, despite it being a relatively tough year for the industry as a whole.”

ABTA’s figures show high numbers of tourists leaving from major UK airports – Heathrow tops the list with one and a half million expected departures. Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Luton, Birmingham and Newcastle airports are also anticipating a large number of passengers.

ABTA indicates that many tourists will be travelling to warmer locations in Spain, Florida, Turkey and Dubai. Travelmatch.co.uk similarly reports the popularity of warm weather destinations; Francis states: “At this time of year warmer climes are very popular. The weather in the UK has been cold, so it is no surprise that many want to spend some time in the sun. The Canary Islands are very popular along with Crete and other Mediterranean destinations.”

Francis believes that travel is becoming a key component of many families’ holiday plans. He concludes: “The figures from this year are absolutely stunning: four million people heading abroad is a significant proportion of the British population. These numbers are particularly strong, yet this is not entirely unexpected. The holiday season is peak time for bookings year after year, and travel is becoming an important part of many Brits’ holiday plans. 2010 has been a very good year, but we expect this trend to only build in the future as more British people realize that this period of time is perfect for a family trip abroad.”
