As the restaurant industry is the cornerstone of our nation’s economy, career opportunities and community involvement it is exciting to know that we are educating more and more young people about the opportunities available to them in the restaurant industry, said Mary M. Adolf, president and chief operating officer of the NRAEF. We are thrilled about where we are headed and how far we have come since the program began in 1997.
The HBA/ProStart Initiative is implemented by state restaurant associations in conjunction with the NRAEF. The partnership brings restaurant and foodservice operators, educators and government officials together to coordinate the school-to-career program in their state. The foodservice and restaurant industry is recognized on a state and national level as the cornerstone of career opportunities and advancement.
The ProStart curriculum is a two-year curriculum designed to teach students the management skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry.
The students participate in paid internships where they are mentored by industry managers. When students meet academic standards and complete a checklist of competencies, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce. The NRAEF offers $2,000 scholarships to certificate holders to further their education.
