Nine US lodging associations awarded for outstanding leadership and growth

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) announced the winners of the 2005 Chairman`s Cup awards today at the spring board of directors meeting at the Loews L`Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C….

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) announced the winners of the 2005 Chairman`s Cup awards today at the spring board of directors meeting at the Loews L`Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C. The awards recognize AH&LA partner state associations that have the most significant increase in membership development and retention programs.



Based on dues categories, the following awards were given to states that had the greatest increase in percentage of rooms and market penetration:



Greatest Percentage – Increase of Rooms



Nebraska Hotel & Motel Association (NH&MA) President Keith Hess accepted the award for the $0-$49,999 dues category. In 2004, NH&MA increased its percentage of rooms by 23 percent. The Hospitality Association of South Carolina (HASC) board member Frans Mustert received the award for the $50,000-$99,999 dues category. Last year, HASC increased its percentage of rooms by 6 percent.



Washington State Hotel & Lodging Association (WSH&LA) President and CEO Jan Simon took the honor for the $100,000+ dues category. During the previous year, WSH&LA increased its percentage of rooms by 4 percent.



Greatest Market Penetration



Three-time past and current winner Hotel Association of Washington, D.C. (HAWDC) President Emily Durso accepted the award for the under 25,000 rooms category. Last year, HAWDC`s market penetration was 94 percent. The Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association (HH&LA) won the award for the over 25,000 rooms category. In 2004, HH&LA`s market penetration was 78 percent.



In 2004, the following award category was created to honor states with the greatest increase in new membership:



Greatest Increase of New Members



Maine Innkeepers Association (MIA) Executive Director Greg Dugal and board member Vern Cook accepted the award for the $0-$49,999 dues category. Minnesota Hotel & Lodging Association President and CEO Dave Siegel and board member Alan Falk received the award for the $50,000 -$99,999 dues category. California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) Director Don Johnson accepted the award for the $100,000+ dues category.

In addition, Montana Innkeepers Association (MIA) received the award for greatest overall increase of properties.



These partner associations have made tremendous efforts in increasing membership in their individual states and thus, AH&LA, said Pam Inman, AH&LA senior vice president of Member and Industry Relations. Increasing membership allows AH&LA and the partner state associations to be a more representative voice for the industry.
