The EU has downgraded tourism in failing to appoint a European commissioner for the sector and create a common policy, the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises (SETE<.>) asserted following a meeting with Greek Euro MPs and members of the EU parliament's regional tourism policy and transport committee. This indicates the limited significance which the EU attaches to tourism issues, despite the fact that it is the only industry which consistently creates new jobs, particularly in the provinces, SETE said.

During the meeting, SETE emphasised the need for closer cooperation between tourism representatives of EU member-states whose incoming arrivals figures are increasing, so that further pressure could be put on EU agencies.

Additionally, they determined that Greek Euro MPs should forge closer working ties with Greek tourist enterprises in order to improve information exchange and upgrade the significance of tourism within the EU.

SETE met with Euro MPs Costas Hadjidakis, Anna Karamanou, Rodi Kratsa and Emmanuel Bakopoulos.
