Short-term rental disinformation campaign makes a West Coast swing

Hotel lobby continues to mislead the public with disingenuous short-term rental claims; This time in Los Angeles.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Travel Technology Association (Travel Tech), the premier trade association for leaders in online travel innovation released the following statement in response to the American Hotel and Lodging Association’s latest attack on short-term rental providers and the peer-to-peer economy in Los Angeles.

“For decades short-term rentals have been an essential piece of California’s massive travel and tourism economy. Advances in technology and innovation have allowed short-term rental platforms to connect providers and hosts with travelers around the country, creating new economic opportunities throughout California,” said Matt Kiessling, who leads short-term rental policy for the Travel Technology Association. “AH&LA continues to make misleading claims with respect to short-term rentals, overtly manipulating data in order to tell a partial story. I’m certain the hotel industry understands the difference between listings and bookings, but it routinely conflates them in order to create disingenuous claims about the local short-term rental landscape.”

Californians know the importance of short-term rentals to travelers, providers, and hundreds of local communities throughout the state. By embracing fair and reasonable policy solutions that include making tax collection and remittance obligations clear, Los Angeles can ensure short-term rentals remain available to travelers seeking to “live like a local.” Short-term rentals have been recognized around the country as a residential use, and fair and reasonable short-term rental regulation has the ability to increase compliance, and in turn, increase tax revenue.

“Travelers have spoken, and short-term rentals aren’t going anywhere” Kiessling continued. “The goal, not just in California, but throughout the country, should be to create good public policy that embraces the innovative spirit of the short-term rental providers who open their homes to travelers. California, and especially Los Angeles, stands to benefit tremendously by embracing that spirit.”
