Washington, DC: According to the latest seasonal forecast from the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA<.>), travel by Americans will decrease 8.4 percent this winter (December, January, February). Americans are expected to take nearly 118 million person-trips during the winter 2001-2002 season, down from 128 million person-trips last winter. A person-trip is one person traveling 50 miles or more from home, one way.

According to TIA's Winter 2001-2002 Travelometer, most winter travel (76%) will be for pleasure or personal reasons while 38 percent will be for business or conventions. One in five (18%) pleasure travelers claim they will travel more this winter than last, while 12 percent plan to travel less. The winter forecast also shows that while 14 percent of business travelers say they'll go on the road more this season, 15 percent say they expect to travel less. Roughly 70 percent of both pleasure and business travelers plan to travel the same amount this winter as last.

"Although travel has been on the rise since September 11, this winter forecast clearly indicates the industry has not fully recovered," said William S. Norman, president and CEO of the Travel Industry Association of America. "However, we have a number of initiatives in place for 2002 aimed at consumers at home and in our key international markets that will help restore the vitality of the travel and tourism industry."

Family members continue to be the most popular travel companions. Among those planning a winter pleasure trip, 53 percent will take along their spouse and 33 percent will take children with them. Sixteen percent will travel with friends, 11 percent will travel with other family members, 7 percent will travel with their parents and 9 percent will travel as part of a group. Twelve percent will travel alone.
