Halkidiki, Greece`s most popular mainland destination for British holidaymakers, has been awarded 28 Blue Flags for its clean beaches and sea for 2003/2004. Halkidiki has consistently been of the highest award winners of any Greek prefecture and is ranked fourth in the country.

Said Makis Athanassopoulos, president of the Halkidiki Hotel Association, once again we have gained a substanial number of awards which shows that our policy of environmental care and monitoring of beach and sea cleanliness really pays off.

With under tree percent of its 500kms of coastline developed, no major industry or rivers and with its many historical sites and green countryside, where visitors are encouraged to walk and cycle, Halkidiki offers an alternative to the hotter, more crowded islands. The Blue Flag is an international quality symbol for beaches and, marinas.

It has been awarded each year since 1987 to every beach and every marina, which fulfil the criteria set for clean sea and beaches, organised facilities and protected environment.

The international co-ordinator of the programme Blue Flag is the Institution for Environmental and in Greece it is the Greek Society for the Protection of Nature.

Holidays to Halkidiki are featured in the brochures of most major tour operations and flights are available from 11 UK airports for this summer.
