The World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), headquartered in Washington D.C., have extended their working agreement established in December 2002 for an additional year.

The recently held WTO General Assembly gave its formal approval to the agreement with TIA, the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the U.S. tourism industry. TIA is a WTO Affiliate Member.

WTO is pleased to announce that the cooperation with the legitimate representative of the United States` tourism private sector met its objectives, and thus we wish to extend and even enhance our cooperation in the future, announced WTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli. He added that WTO is especially pleased with the close cooperation with TIA in this difficult period and its contribution to the work of the WTO Recovery Committee, which was set up to support the tourism industry after 11 September.

The agreement between our two organizations has resulted in both tangible and intangible benefits for TIA, for our members who constitute the U.S. travel and tourism industry, and for that segment of U.S. travel and tourism that is actively involved in world tourism,
TIA President & CEO William S. Norman said in a letter to the WTO Secretary-General.

Mr. Norman cited opportunities to gain additional intelligence on a global basis that have led to important refinements in U.S. travel industry marketing and recovery initiatives. He also wrote that the agreement has created networking opportunities that have benefited the U.S. travel industry.
