Travel and tourism must be recognised and supported by the Greek government as a sector which makes a significant contribution to employment in both populated and remote areas, the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises (SETE<.>) stressed last week during an Athens seminar.

The chairman of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC<.>), Jean-Claude Baumgarten, on a visit to Greece, underlined that the Greek industry needed to be strengthened and investments made in tourism infrastructure.

He pointed out the traditional "sun and sea" vacation was no longer as popular, and being overtaken by culture- and history-based travel.

Baumgarten said he expected the 2004 Athens Olympics to act as a catalyst, bringing more tourists to Greece in the long-term.

A WTTC survey has predicted that 15.5% of Greece's labour force will be working in the tourism sector by 2010.
