Abu Dhabi Airports launches Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme at Zayed International Airport to support passengers with hidden disabilities.

ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – Abu Dhabi Airports and Etihad Airways are taking a significant step towards creating a more supportive travel experience with the launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme at Zayed International Airport (AUH) and onboard Etihad Airways flights. This initiative underscores both organisations’ commitment to supporting all passengers, particularly those with non-visible disabilities.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, a globally recognised symbol for non-visible disabilities, is now available at Zayed International Airport (AUH). This programme provides a discreet way for passengers with conditions like autism, chronic pain, or anxiety to signal to staff that they may require additional assistance or compassion. Passengers can pick up their complimentary Sunflower lanyards at the two dedicated Special Assistance desks located in the pre-check-in area of AUH, allowing them to discreetly communicate their needs and fostering a more supportive environment for all.

It’s about recognising that the kindest gestures are the ones that acknowledge unseen challenges. This means our staff are now even better equipped to assist passengers who may require a little extra time, understanding, or assistance, ensuring a smoother and more positive experience for everyone.”

To ensure the programme’s success, both AUH and Etihad Airways have implemented comprehensive staff training. Frontline teams from the airport, its stakeholders and business partners have undergone specialised training to better understand the needs of passengers with hidden disabilities and provide appropriate assistance. Staff members who have completed the training will wear a Sunflower pin to denote being trained supporters of the initiative.

Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO) is serving as the exclusive manufacturer and production centre for the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyards in the GCC region. The organisation’s involvement highlights how each lanyard used at Zayed International Airport is a symbol of inclusivity, hard work, dedication, and is made with the skill of its members of determination who craft them at dedicated vocational rehabilitation workshops.

To ensure that every individual can fully enjoy their journey, we must make travel accessible and inclusive for all. The Sunflower lanyard is a simple yet powerful tool that helps create a more supportive environment for travellers with non-visible conditions, ensuring that everyone can travel with confidence and ease.”

August 2024 traffic statistics

The airline carried 1.7 million guests and achieved an average passenger load factor of 89% across the month, reflecting very strong performance during the summer holiday season.

Antonoaldo Neves said: “Our passenger numbers in August increased significantly compared to the same period last year, demonstrating our continued growth momentum.

“Year-to-date, we have welcomed 12.0 million passengers, an increase of 36% compared to the previous year. As of August 2024, our rolling 12-month passenger count reached more than 17 million, which is almost 70% higher than the full year 2022.

“We maintained a healthy passenger load factor of 89% for August 2024, even as we expanded our capacity compared to 2023. This robust performance, particularly during the holiday period, underscores the growing preference for Etihad among travellers.

“Our operating fleet has grown to 95 aircraft, up from 79 of the same period last year. This increase of 16 new aircraft in the past twelve months is a result of the ambition and commitment of the entire company, working together to achieve this in exceptional time, while at the same time consistently delivering a load factor exceeding 86%.

“In the month of August, we brought the last two of the six A321neos expected in 2024 into operation. In addition, we are now flying to 10 more passenger destinations than at the same point last year. This expansion enhances our network and supports Abu Dhabi’s position as a global aviation hub and as a major destination for tourists from around the world.”
