Air Canada<.> announced said in an announcement in late December that Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) has approved the airline`s voluntary Workshare Program for employees represented by the CAW, designed to mitigate job reductions. The Workshare Program compensates employees for reduced hours through the Employment Insurance (EI) Workshare Program. Over 2100 CAW customer sales and service agents have applied to participate in the program. Earlier in the year, Air Canada had announced that it had reached an agreement with the CAW on voluntary workplace programs to mitigate job reductions. The agreement, which builds on a tentative agreement on worksharing reached October 21, is expected to result in significant cost reductions through programs including the job sharing program as well as leaves of absence and a special retirement incentive severance plan. The agreement takes immediate effect with savings to be realized beginning in January 2002.
