American Airlines says, mahalo Hawaii, for providing such a destination for its passengers over the past 25 years.

On Dec. 17, 1980, flights from New York, Chicago, and Dallas/Fort Worth stopped in Los Angeles as a waypoint for American Airlines` inaugural service to Honolulu, Hawaii. The Boeing 747 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 flights were timed to provide convenient connections for regional cities from their originating cities, and connecting flights were even added from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, so travelers could stop off in Las Vegas on their way to or from Honolulu.

From three daily one-stops to Oahu in 1980, American’s service has grown to 16 non-stop roundtrips to four Hawaiian destinations from four mainland cities today. American added service to Kahului ( Maui) in 1984, Kona ( Hawaii) in 2001, and Lihue ( Kauai) in 2002. Oahu and Maui have nonstop flights from Los Angeles, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, and San Francisco. Hawaii and Kauai are served nonstop from Los Angeles.

American`s presence has continued to grow in the past 25 years to include service to Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai,” said Michael Nozaki, American’s General Manager of Hawaii Operations. “Our employees take pride on being an integral part of the local community.

American now serves Hawaiian destinations with modern and efficient Boeing 757s and 767s sporting first and coach classes. American also codeshares on Hawaiian Airlines inter-island flights between Honolulu and Lihue/Hilo/Kona/Maui; between Maui and Lihue/Honolulu; and between Lihue and Hilo/Kona.
