Dubai`s Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) on Saturday said the $4.1 billion Dubai International Airport expansion was ahead of schedule and the plan has been revised to cater to 70 million passengers a year.

DCA said passenger movement projections have been revised and it is expected that Dubai will handle 70 million passengers by 2016 and 100 million by 2025, according to reports in the UAE`s dailies. DCA officials said in the next six weeks the second package that include the foundation and concrete works for Terminal 3 and Concourse 2 buildings will be finalised and work will begin by early August this year.

Nearly 50 per cent of the work for the first package that includes excavation and piling work for Terminal 3 and Concourse 2 has been completed, said DCA Engineering Projects Director Khalifa Zaffin at a press conference to announce the Airport Build and supply Exhibition to be held at Airport Expo from June 2-4.

The exhibition has been commissioned as it is an important element in the decision-making process for our ambitious development plan, designed to make Dubai International Airport one of the world`s leading aviation hubs, Zaffin said. He said the revised expansion plan will entail increasing aircraft capacity movement to 65 per hour against 55 now.
