The inaugural flight of Gulf Traveller, a subsidiary of Gulf Air, took off from Abu Dhabi international airport yesterday. The all-economy, full-service airline, marks the dawn of a new era in the history of regional aviation. The flight that took off for Jeddah was seen off by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Civil Aviation Department, and a number of senior government officials.

The flight is not to be confused with the so-called budget or `no-frills` carriers. It offers everything traditionally associated with an economy class service on a major international carrier, said James Hogan, Gulf Air president and chief executive, according to reports in the UAE`s dailies.

The airline will cover routes presently served by Gulf Air`s network, especially those where customer-demand exceeds existing capacity. The routes include exotic leisure destinations. Along with Jeddah, other cities within the GCC also feature on the destination list, while future plans include extending the network to secondary European destinations. In summer, Salalah and Zanzibar are the two feature destinations for the Gulf Traveller.

Gulf Traveller is operating out of Gulf Air`s base in Abu Dhabi, using six single-class Boeing 767-300s, all decked out in a distinctive new livery, an extension of the airline`s new corporate identity introduced earlier this year.
