The U.S. Department of Transportation`s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA<.>), international leader in aviation, is helping to bring together aviation experts from around the world to share knowledge and advancements in aviation technologies.

The FAA and the Alaska Aviation Coordination Council are co-sponsoring the International Advanced Aviation Technologies Conference 2002 at the University of Alaska Anchorage Aviation Technology Center in Anchorage. The conference will be held August 20-23.

Aviation experts will have an opportunity to discuss new and emerging aviation technologies such as the FAA`s Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology. Pilots in Alaska are using ADS-B to help increase their situational awareness.

Aircraft owners who equip with ADS-B have an opportunity to save many more lives in Alaska, a state with one of the highest aviation-related fatality rates.

The FAA recently announced the architecture for ADS-B. At this conference, users will be able to discuss: ways to ensure that ADS-B is globally interoperable; the development of the necessary standards; the support of spectrum planning; and to identify equipage requirements for both aircraft and ground systems.

Reporters from around the world and in the U.S. are invited to attend the conference sessions and the optional activities. Optional activities include familiarization of the Capstone program, an FAA program utilizing ADS-B technology in Bethel, Alaska, where conference participants will have the opportunity to fly with aircraft operators aboard their ADS-B-equipped planes to a remote Alaskan village.
