At least 5.2 million passengers and 31.6 million pounds of cargo moved through Southwest Florida International Airport (SWFIA) in 2000, exceeding every record set in the airport`s history, in comparison to the results recorded a year earlier when passenger volume was up 6.3 percent, the biggest increase since 1994.

At the same time it was also reported that air freight volume also increased almost 6.3 percent for the year. As expected holiday traffic boosted passenger traffic in the month of November where authorities recorded a dramatic growth or a 14.7 percent increase, and December also showed increased results with almost 477,000 passengers passing through this US airport or a percentage of some 10.3 percent.

But that is not all, for the fifth consecutive year, the Federal Aviation Administration found the airport 100 percent in compliance with all standards checked during its annual inspection. SWFIA was one of only five airports in the FAA Southern Region to earn that distinction.
