Fraport hands over site to Lufthansa for building A380 maintenance base at FRA

Fraport AG handed over to Lufthansa the cleared development site at the southern side of Frankfurt Airport

Fraport AG handed over to Lufthansa the cleared development site at the southern side of Frankfurt Airport (FRA) where the airline will construct a new maintenance base for its future fleet of A380 superjumbo jets. Fraport’s executive board vice chairman Prof. Manfred Scholch said, “We have completed all of the necessary prerequisites for construction of this maintenance base to begin in November.” Scholch added that, in addition to the new hangar, the maintenance base will include a warehouse, a ramp area with aircraft parking stands, a taxiway, and a rainwater retention basin.

At the beginning of September, the German Federal Administrative High Court (BVG) in Leipzig confirmed the Hesse Administrative High Court’s (HVG) decision of June 28 regarding zoning approval for the planned A380 maintenance base at FRA. As a result, Fraport AG began site clearing (cutting trees, etc.) on September 12.

Fraport AG’s land utilization agreement with Lufthansa for the site at the southern side of the airport, which is now ready for construction, runs for a period of 65 years. Lufthansa is investing about €150 million for the new A380 maintenance base at its Frankfurt home airport.

Fraport’s main customer Lufthansa has ordered a total of 15 Airbus superjumbos as future “flagships” of the Lufthansa fleet. The first four A380s, each having a capacity of 555 passengers, are expected to go into scheduled service with Lufthansa at the start of the Summer Timetable 2008.
