The Suburban O`Hare Commission, a council of governments representing more than one million people living in communities surrounding O`Hare Airport, moved to back Illinois Governor George Ryan`s determination to construct a new south suburban regional airport. However, the commission also warned against a deal that, in exchange, would bring new runways or any expansion to Chicago`s O`Hare Airport. In a resolution passed unanimously at its regular meeting on Feb.1, 2001, the commission said it remained adamantly opposed to a new airport-new runway swap. The commission believes that any new O`Hare runways will ultimately doom the viability of a south suburban airport, lead to unrealistic demands for huge increases in O`Hare capacity and ultimately, destroy the region`s ability to remain a competitive player in the nation`s aviation system. In another resolution, the commission demanded that the city of Chicago disclose taxpayer-financed noise data that it is has gathered from suburbs surrounding O`Hare, but has kept secret for seven years.
