Kyoto welcomes increase in international visitor numbers

August was the sixth consecutive month to see an increase with the total number of international passengers using Kansai International Airport reaching 353,160. The rise in visitor numbers can be attributed to travellers coming to Kyoto for business.

Kyoto Convention Bureau has welcomed the news that Kansai International Airport has seen a significant increase in the number of international passengers arriving at the airport in August. The latest figures show a 41% rise in international travellers using the airport compared to the same month in 2011.

August was the sixth consecutive month to see an increase with the total number of international passengers using the airport reaching 353,160. The rise in visitor numbers can be attributed to travellers coming to Kyoto for business.

Kyoto has hosted a number of high profile conferences and meetings during the last six months including the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, the 12th International Conference on Creep and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, the 80th International Commission On Large Dams (ICOLD) Annual Meeting and the 24th Congress, the biennial congress of International Society for Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions and the 19th International Mass Spectrometry Conference.

Kyoto is one of the most accessible cities in Japan thanks to its proximity to Kansai International Airport and its location on the Shinkansen bullet train line. Earlier this year, Peach Aviation – Japan’s first dedicated low cost airline carrier – introduced international flights from Kansai International Airport to Seoul, Korea, Hong Kong and Taipei. And further investment is being made at the airport to improve access for visitors to the region and will be home to Japan’s first ever dedicated low cost carrier terminal. Known as KIX T2, the 30,000 sq metre building will have boarding gates for nine aircraft and facilitate early morning and late night landings possible, making it easy for international visitors to travel globally.

James Kent, international marketing manager of the Kyoto Convention Bureau, comments: “Kyoto is renowned for its experience in hosting international business events. The city combines first class facilities and history which makes it very attractive for business meetings and conferences. Infrastructure also plays an important role when organisers choose a destination. Kyoto has seen significant investment in this area so it is now even easier for business visitors to get here, and we are pleased to see that this has had a positive impact on the number of international passengers passing through Kansai International Airport. As further improvements are made to make the city more accessible we expect to see a further increase in the number of people from Asia, and around the world, to attend business events being held in Kyoto.
