Paulos Ashebir Lakew (IATA): “Global demand for air travel is within 15% of 2019 levels”

Southeast European countries had recovered 91% of their pre-pandemic passenger traffic through October 2022, ahead of Europe at 82% and global recovery at 72%.

During the Aviation Event in Romania, Paulos Ashebir Lakew, Head of Industry Analysis, IATA talked with TravelDailyNews International about the recovery of the airline industry.

Domestic traffic recovered quickly following the onset of the pandemic, owing to the early opening of domestic markets. Domestic passenger traffic currently stands within 3% of 2019 traffic levels. Meanwhile, international traffic has slowly recovered due to impacts from travel restrictions and the war in Ukraine. International traffic recovery has been improving recently, helped by the reopening of international markets in Asia, according to newest data analytics.
