Six million passengers at Katowice Airport

Katowice Airport

Katowice Airport celebrated its first six-million passenger year, marking a historic milestone with continued growth expected, alongside significant terminal and infrastructure investments planned through 2032.

Yesterday, 28th November 2024, Katowice Airport – for the first time in its history – handled six million passengers in a single calendar year. Tomasz from Olkusz, who flew with his family on holiday to Tenerife on board of Enter Air’s Boeing 737-800, was the lucky traveller. Tomasz regularly flies via Katowice Airport’s network.

The six-millionth passenger received gifts. The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze SA – GTL SA) – the manager of Katowice Airport – presented a voucher allowing to use the Business Lounge, Fast Track and car park. Enter Air gifted tickets for two persons, which may be used on the air carrier’s individual flights departing from Katowice Airport. Baltona SA prepared gifts in the form of a cabin suitcase and a set of perfumes and sweets.

“Six million passengers handled in a single caledar year is yet another milestone when it comes to the development of Katowice Airport. We are glad that the event took place on Enter Air’s flight. This Polish carrier is a significant business partner of Katowice Airport, as well as the leading airline in the area of charter flights at our airport. Next year, we expect further growth of passenger traffic at Katowice Airport. The current forecast indicates that we will handle approximately seven million passengers,” said Artur Tomasik, President of the Board of GTL SA.

The Airport handled one million passengers for the first time in 2005, two million in 2008, three million in 2015, four million in 2018, and five million in 2023.

The latest forecast for traffic at Katowice Airport expects further growth of the number of handled passengers. GTL SA expects that even 8 million passengers will travel via Katowice Airport’s network of flights in 2028, while 10 million travellers may be handled in 2030.

Due to forecast traffic growth, GTL SA is carrying out the biggest investment program in the airport’s history; it will conclude in 2032. The main goal of the program is to increase throughput and quality of terminal and parking infrastructure. The biggest planned investment is the construction of a central passenger terminal; it will have jet bridges and a tunnel leading to “Pyrzowice Lotnisko” (Katowice Airport) train station. As part of the investment, built will be a transfer hub for buses and motor coaches, as well as a new road system with a Kiss & Fly area. Expansion of existing car parks, as well as construction of a multi-storey car park, are also planned. Currently, a tender for the designer of the central terminal and accompanying infrastructure is underway. It is carried out in the form of a competitive dialogue.

Katowice Airport is among the biggest regional airports in Poland. In 2023, record-breaking 5.6M passengers travelled via its network of flights. The forecast for 2024 estimates that over 6.2M passengers will be handled, the most in the history of the Airport. Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport is the country leader in the area of charter traffic, and one of the biggest cargo airports in Poland.
