US carriers praised U.S. and China governments for their desicion to open the way for expansion of the aviation industry between the two countries. In particular, Continental Airlines praised Transportation Secretary Mary Peters and Assistant Secretary Andy Steinberg for negotiating an impressive amendment to the U.S. – China aviation agreement.

The additional frequencies provide an opportunity for Continental to serve the largest U.S. to China market that lacks daily U.S. carrier service — New York/Newark to Shanghai.

This new agreement will result in economic opportunities across the United States and provide consumers with significantly greater choices for their U.S. – China travel needs.

We congratulate Secretary Peters, Assistant Secretary Steinberg and the Administration on their successful efforts to secure additional China routes which is a significant step toward an open skies agreement, said Continental Airlines Chairman and CEO, Larry Kellner.

Moreover, US Airways joined other airlines and congratulated both the U.S. and Chinese governments

on their decision that promises to expand the availability of new service between the U.S. and China.

Earlier this year we announced our intention to pursue service to China and this new agreement certainly paves the way for that to become a near-term reality, said US Airways Chairman and CEO Doug Parker. We commend the governments of both countries on this monumental agreement that recognizes a

free market enterprise, and we look forward to being able to offer our customers access to one of the world`s leading countries for commerce, culture and tourism.

Parker continued, We also look forward to participating in the allocation process of these newly awarded routes with the Department of Transportation.
