Best heli skiing destinations this winter

All of the heli skiing options below are epic, so it’s difficult to choose the best. Much of it depends on your location, your budget, and how remote you want to go.

When the snow starts dusting the tops of the mountains, it’s no wonder your mind turns to skiing. You can always head to your local slopes to scratch that burning itch to go skiing, but why not plan something a little more epic. Why not try some heli skiing in waist-deep powder snow? That way, you are guaranteed to get first tracks every time!

Got your attention? Great, because listed below are some of the best heli skiing destinations for you to try this winter. Just don’t forget to take a proper ski touring backpack, warm ski clothing, and your powder leashes…because this ain’t Kansas anymore, Toto!

Canadian Mountain Holiday Resorts
There is no better place to go skiing than at one of the CMH resorts. After all, their founder, Hans Gmoser, started the heli skiing movement back in the mid-1960s!

This place offers a range of options across British Columbia, including Adamants, Bugaboos, Cariboos, Gothics, Kootenay, and Revelstoke. And, even if you are not used to the unusual ski technique required by deep powder, they will teach you that, too. So, no excuses!

Mike Wiegele, Canada
Mike Wiegele is another heli skiing guru who is now over 80 years old and still skiing. And, he invented his own avalanche safety system, too, so you know you are in good hands!

His team operates out of…where else but British Columbia, Canada! He has four resorts to choose from, many of which are extremely remote. So, you don’t have to worry about anyone stealing your line because you will certainly have the area to yourselves.

Valdez, Alaska
If you have ever watched the X Games on TV, you probably have seen how insanely steep and deep the skiing is in Alaska. I am talking about pitches up to 55 degrees, which feels closer to vertical than anything you will have ever skied before. And, it certainly isn’t groomed!

The main ski areas for heli skiing is in the Chugach mountain range just outside of Valdez, and there is a range of tour operators you can choose from. Just keep in mind that unlike many other ski areas, later in the season is better in Alaska. So, April is usually the best month.

The Swiss Alps
Why not head to the place where winter tourism was invented over 150 years ago–Switzerland. And, one of the most iconic places to ski in this Alpine mecca is below the powering peak of the Matterhorn in Zermatt.

You will be flown by Air Zermatt, who is responsible for mountain rescue in the area, so you know you will be in expert hands. These guys not only fly, ski, climb, and hike, but they also rescue people from mind-blowing locations on a daily basis.

And, when you are done for the day, you can kick back in a Swiss spa and unwind, or simply take a stroll in a town that allows no cars.

Lake Wanaka, New Zealand
To make things a little more exotic, let’s take a peek at what’s available south of the equator–in New Zealand. Made famous by the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, New Zealand has some spectacular scenery and mountains, much of which is on the South Island.

The most famous ski town in New Zealand is actually Queenstown, but Wanaka is more relaxed and less visited. It’s a great option for those wanting the best powder for themselves. Most operations will take you in and around the Mount Aspiring National Park area, which is north of the town, and otherwise very hard to reach.

Of course, being in the Southern Hemisphere, the best months are July and August, which might be the opposite of what you might expect.

Antarctica via boat
If you seriously want to head somewhere almost no one else has been, then Antarctica is the place for you. The heli skiing there is something you will certainly be able to brag about to your friends. Not only is it very remote, but you have to reach it via yacht!

Powder South offers three different yacht options, and, yes, none of which are cheap. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and something many of us will never be able to afford. But you can always dream, right?

Which heli skiing is the best?
All of the heli skiing options above are epic, so it’s difficult to choose the best. Much of it depends on your location, your budget, and how remote you want to go.

However, whichever you choose to do, you certainly won’t regret it either way!
