How do CDNs work

CDN services from G-Core Labs help to reduce bounce rates, increase session duration, and improve SEO and conversion rate.

Internet users usually wait no more than 5 seconds for a web page to load. If your website exceeds this waiting time, you may lose a customer. CDN hosting is a way for users to load your website quickly in any city or country that you need to reach.

What is CDN
The problem with page load speed is often caused by the fact that the client is far away from the server from which they are requesting data. For example, a user in Budapest tries to view a video or photo stored on a server in Washington, DC. They will probably get bored while the page is downloaded. To speed up this process, a CDN is used. It is a network of servers located in various cities, countries, or continents that store cached content from the origin server.

So, it turns out that the data are stored simultaneously on several media. Thanks to this, the origin server receives fewer requests, which means less load, especially during peak hours. And in case of its failure, your visitors and customers can still receive the cached data via CDN.

The Algorithm of CDN Work

The way a CDN works is as follows:

  1. A user tries to access a web page.
  2. The CDN determines the user’s IP address and location (i.e., whether the person is in Toronto, Paris, or New York).
  3. One of the CDN’s servers, which is closest to the user, sends them the cached version of the page (photos, audio, video).

There is also a CDN scheme, which is designed in such a way that the origin server is used exclusively as a storage device. Most often, it is used in streaming. The video is uploaded and stored on the server, which doesn’t provide data upon user request. Instead, it transfers the cached files to the PoPs for the client to receive data from there.

CDNs are set up and maintained by providers such as G-Core Labs. As a final result, CDN services from G-Core Labs help to reduce bounce rates, increase session duration, and improve SEO and conversion rate.
