Flying can be expensive – especially if you’re traveling out of the country on a multi-hour flight – and can impact  your travel budget. That’s why most people look for cheap flights when they travel. However, finding the perfect deal on a flight is easier said than done and there are many misconceptions about getting cheap flights online.

Using a flight aggregator can be a great way  to find the most affordable flights at any time, and there are ideal times to visit websites like FlightHub to pick up the best deals possible. In this article, we will discuss how to maximize your potential for finding cheap flights as well as some myths that surround purchasing plane tickets.

Time is (not) of the essence
When to buy a flight is perhaps the most frequently asked question and there are numerous misconceptions around the subject. Firstly, it is important when you purchase a ticket, at least in terms of weeks or months before a flight. However, there is no golden rule for which day or which hour you should pull the trigger on a purchase.

When looking at the time of day, the situation has changed in recent years. Back in the old days of online flight shopping, there were certain days and hours when buying a ticket would increase your chances of a cheap deal. That’s why many people still say buying a ticket on a Wednesday at five in the morning is the way to go.

Back then, airlines would load airfares online one day during the week and only once a week. For early buyers, there were a number of cheap seats available on each flight. These days, carriers are more dynamic and don’t just change prices each week. Instead, airlines can change fares each day and even each hour by using algorithms.

While this makes it harder to define when the cheapest flights are available, the benefit is affordable fares can pop up at any time.

Time is still important
Sure, it may not be important what day or hour you look for a flight, but it is very important to purchase a ticket within a specific window. Again, the methodology used by airlines has changed in recent years. Carriers would usually lower prices significantly during the last few weeks before a flight. Those last-minute deals became famous for people looking for a bargain.

That’s not the case anymore as fares now skyrocket as the date of the flight draws closer. Companies realized traditional vacationers were not the usual customers for last minute flights. Instead, it was business travelers who were purchasing them. In other words, the type of customer who would need that ticket no matter what. Reflecting this, airlines hiked the price of last-minute plane tickets.

So, the obvious question is when should you buy your plane ticket? Well, here are some pointers to consider:

Domestic Flights: Around 1-3 months before the flight.

International: Between 2 and 8 months before the flight.

This is a general window that can help you to find a good deal. Of course, those windows are fairly large so remember to shop around a bit within those timeframes and wait for the best time to buy.

Avoid peak times if you can
Air travel tends to be different from many other sectors in service or retail. During holidays, other sectors will typically have offers and deals available. In their air market, carriers know these are the times of greater demand and necessity. This means those “Peak Times” like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s can get very expensive if you’re looking for a flight.

If you absolutely must fly during these times (many people must), you should book the ticket as far out as reasonably possible. A good method for getting the cheapest deals for peak times is to book during an opposite holiday. For example, if you need a flight on Christmas Eve, book your flight at Easter or July 4th (or another suitable spring/summer holiday).

Either way, during these times you should expect to be paying more than you normally would for your fare.
