How to take care of your glasses while travelling

You might find that when you reach your destination the first thing you end up doing is fixing bent glasses or trying to tighten loose screws. Here are some basic tips on how you avoid any disasters while you travel.

Glasses can be fragile yet expensive items, and in addition to this – they are essential! You need your prescription glasses to be able to see which means you need to take them with you wherever you go. But when things get shoved into backpacks or jostled around on long journeys, they tend to get damaged. You might find that when you reach your destination the first thing you end up doing is fixing bent glasses or trying to tighten loose screws. Here are some basic tips on how you avoid any disasters while you travel.

Use a hard case
This seems like an obvious one, but it is easy to get careless and start packing your glasses loose in your luggage or just wrapping them in a t-shirt. The best way to guarantee your glasses stay in tip-top shape no matter how much they get put through is to invest in a high-quality hard case to store them in whenever you are not wearing them. Try to avoid hanging them on your t-shirt or resting them on the top of your head. You can even get yourself a glasses chain if you anticipate you might be taking them off a lot.

Do not wear them in situations where they can fall off
If you are travelling then you probably have a variety of activities scheduled, maybe you are going on a bungee jump or diving into your hotel swimming pool or riding a rollercoaster. Whilst you will want to enjoy these things with perfect vision, you need to remove your glasses before embarking on any such endeavours otherwise you may find them flying off your face to land shattered on the ground.

Pack a repair kit
If you do not already have a glasses repair kit, then you should purchase one. Sometimes a screw can come loose and once it is loose, you run the risk of the arm falling off altogether. Pack a small repair kit to keep on top of any damage your glasses might endure on your trip.

Take an extra pair of glasses
Sometimes no matter how well you take care of your glasses they end up broken or scratched and you find that you need a new pair so that you can fully enjoy your holiday. Always pack a spare pair in your luggage. You should bring backups for all your essentials such as medication, glasses fall into this category because they are required in order for you to be able to see! Even if you wear contact lenses, always bring your glasses with you just in case.

Know your prescription
Keep a record of your prescription somewhere that you can easily access whilst travelling in case you need to get a new pair made. If you do not have a spare or if, God forbid, you end up losing both pairs then you might need to go to a local optometrist to purchase some new ones. Having your prescription ready will save you a huge hassle and reduce any awkwardness with regard to the language barrier.
