Minimalism in motion: Why pack light on your next trip

If you want the best trip possible, try minimalism in motion. Here are the reasons to pack light for your next jaunt abroad.

Given a choice between hauling around a bulky suitcase and slinging a lithe bag over your shoulder, most people would pick the latter. Yet, in airports, hotels and taxi queues throughout the world, you’ll find people saddled with large bags.

Understandably, some people feel the impulse to pack everything. Unsure of what they can and can’t get abroad, they opt to stuff as many options as possible in their bag. All that does, however, is weigh you down, waste your time and prevent you from truly experiencing the riches of your destination’s culture.

If you want the best trip possible, try minimalism in motion. Here are the reasons to pack light for your next jaunt abroad.

The freedom to move
Packing greatly restricts your movement. With large suitcases to roll and heavy bags to carry, you’ll find that even the simplest tasks – walking the cobblestone streets of Milan or taking the train in Tokyo – become prohibitively difficult.

One key reason avid travellers suggest packing light is that it frees you up to be spontaneous. Unburdened by cumbersome luggage, you can quickly catch a train out of town, take day trips to the countryside or move hotels at the drop of a hat.

Packing light means living minimally
Minimalism, as it applies to travel, is about carrying only what you need. When you strip to the essentials and divest from excess, you’re in a more prime position to enjoy your surroundings. All of a sudden, you aren’t worrying about which shoes to wear or what necklace to pair with your rings; you’re focusing on the rich culture existing around you.

That doesn’t mean you can’t look great, though. There are sophisticated, sleek merino wool travel clothing options available that stay fresh for a long time, so you won’t have to pack as many items. Also, merino wool clothes are breathable and insulating, meaning they can handle whatever cold and hot temperature fluctuations you experience at your destination. They are an essential part of the minimalist travel wardrobe.

You get the most value out of your time abroad
Packing light saves you two important things: time and money. It saves you money by ensuring that you avoid those exorbitant checked bag fees and that XL taxi upgrade on your drive from the airport. It saves you time by ensuring you won’t have to wait at those long-drawn-out baggage carousels, nor spend 30 minutes portering your bags up to your hotel room.

This frees up time and resources to do things you want to do. When you travel, you have a finite amount of time and (generally) a finite budget. To make the most out of that time and budget, you’re better to leave the 30 wardrobe options and hope and opt for something long-lasting and timeless, like a few simple merino wool crew neck shirts and a couple pairs of pants (jeans and chinos are versatile choices.)

Don’t fall into the over-packing trap. Be discerning, tasteful and discriminating when you pack your bags. For your restraint, you’ll be rewarded with a freer, more enriching trip abroad.
