Pregnant women to exercise extra caution amidst air travel chaos

Even under normal circumstances, it is important that a pregnant woman consults with her doctor prior to making air travel arrangements. No, with the risk of delayed flights and overcrowding being significantly higher, it is imperative to find out whether it is safe for you to fly and also enquire about special precautions you need to take and what potential warning signs to look out for.

Anyone who has flown in recent times can attest to the changes currently ensuing due to overbooked planes and understaffed airports. While this may only be a mild inconvenience for some, large crowds and delayed flights can be the cause of great discomfort and anxiety if you are pregnant (or traveling with small children). Even though only approximately 8% of all pregnancies involve challenges that could pose a danger to either mom or baby, traveling, and especially traveling by air can be risky. With the summer travel chaos predicted to continue for a while, pregnant women are encouraged to either postpone their plans or take extra precautions while traveling.

Doctor approval is essential
Even under normal circumstances, it is important that a pregnant woman consults with her doctor prior to making air travel arrangements. No, with the risk of delayed flights and overcrowding being significantly higher, it is imperative to find out whether it is safe for you to fly and also enquire about special precautions you need to take and what potential warning signs to look out for. Now is also the time to ask about things like decompression socks, additional nausea meds, and adequate nutrition and hydration. Even if a pregnancy is deemed low-risk and healthy, medical experts may advise traveling until the summer chaos subsides.

Comfort is key
Once their baby is born, many new mothers consider hiring help, especially while traveling. While still pregnant, however, most pregnant women try to hold on to their independence for as long as possible. Now that the risk of disruption is very high, the least you can do when traveling by air is make sure you are as comfortable as possible. Ask for an aisle seat where possible and remember to wear comfy clothes and shoes. Ensure that you remain well hydrated and don’t be scared to walk around a bit during the flight once you are permitted to do so.

Take extra precautions during international travels
If you are planning to jump on a long-haul flight to an international destination while pregnant you need to take additional precautions, especially now that you might come face-to-face with long delays or canceled flights. Your destination may require you to get vaccinated against any of a range of diseases including yellow fever and typhoid fever.  Diarrhea is another common concern when traveling overseas as your body simply may not be used to the water or food abroad. As dehydration is a common side effect of diarrhea it is important that you are adequately prepared.

Even an easy pregnancy comes with some challenges. Luckily there are a number of things you can do to help ensure your travels by air are both safe and comfortable for both you and your unborn baby, even during chaotic times.
