Before moving, here are 7 things you should know that will help improve your experience living in Canberra!

Australia’s capital city, Canberra, is beautiful, with lots to offer. It's the perfect place for people who love nature but also want to be close to the city centre. With so many great schools and universities, great shopping centers and dining options, it is no wonder so many people flock to Canberra every year. One of the more affordable cities to live in, moving to Canberra seems very appealing. Before you take the final leap, we have put together this handy list of the 7 things you should know before moving to Canberra.

Before moving, here are 7 things you should know that will help improve your experience living in Canberra!

There's not just one city centre
Southerners often don't realise that Canberra has many different types of city centers, ranging from a large commercial centre to a small village. The one thing they all have in common is that they are different from the Central Business District.

The city centre is where most people live and work, and it's home to several museums and galleries such as Gorman House Gallery, Canberra Glassworks and the National Museum of Australia (NMA). It's also home to at least one shopping centre: City Walk, which has over 230 shops, including Myer and David Jones department store and speciality fashion boutiques like Cotton On Kids or Witchery Lingerie & Swimwear. Plus, there's plenty more on offer, including walking trails through Murrumbidgee Riverlands Nature Reserve or cycling along Lake Burley Griffin's foreshore pathway alongside Black Mountain Tower observation deck – perfect for those who love nature!

Don't get caught out by parking prices
One of the most significant difficulties facing residents in Canberra city is parking. While it's possible to find street parking outside of peak hours, it can be pretty tricky during these times and impossible if you're looking for a spot on the weekend.

If you do manage to park outside during peak hours, be prepared to pay $2 an hour or more. Is it possible to find cheap monthly parking in Canberra city? The answer is yes! You can reserve spots across the city online using services like Parkhound. It is so simple, you download the app, search for spaces near your desired location, and then you can filter options depending on your needs. The bottom line? If your plans include driving into town on any given day, plan ahead by reserving a spot at one of the many available spaces.

It's an excellent place for foodies
One of the great things about Canberra city centre is that it's a foodie haven. You'll find all kinds of restaurants and cafes here, from fine dining to fast food, street food and cheap eats. There are international cuisines and plenty of Australian favourites like meat pies, burgers and sushi rolls. And if you're looking for something to eat at 2:00 AM after a night out with friends, don't worry—the city has plenty of 24-hour eateries, too.

Finding an apartment can be challenging
Finding an apartment can be challenging, so make sure you know what is available in the area you would like to move. Check out the surrounding area and make sure it is what you want. You’ll need to consider schools, public transport, shops and cafes, and your commute when deciding where to live.

Ensure you understand the lease agreement before signing anything or paying money upfront. For example, some leases may require tenants to pay their own electricity bills while others are included in the rent payments (and vice versa).

Transport is easy and cheap
One of the great things about Canberra is the public transport system is easy to use and cheap. You can take the free City Circle Tram that loops all around downtown Canberra or get on one of the many buses (some of which are free) to get around quickly.

A light rail is being built from central Canberra through Tuggeranong on its way to Woden. If you want to head out into the suburbs or travel further in NSW and Victoria, there is already an underground train station.

It can be pretty cold in winter
While Canberra city centre is a great place to live, it can get very cold. The average temperature in winter is around -5C, with temperatures, sometimes dropping as low as -15C. This means you need to keep yourself warm when you head outside! Here are some tips on how to dress for the weather:

Wear layers – this will allow you to remove or add clothing depending on your activity level and how cold it gets outside

Use a scarf – this keeps your neck warm and looks fashionable!
Wear gloves – these will protect your hands from frostbite when out for a walk in winter

There are lots of day trips
There are lots of day trips you can do from the city. For example, you could visit some of the nearby national parks, go to one of the nearby cities, visit some wineries, or even tour historic sites like Old Parliament House and Government House (which is right next door).

Canberra has a lot to offer for people living in the city
While it may not have the international renown of Sydney or Melbourne, Canberra is a great place to live. It has received the title of “Australia’s most liveable city” for several years. It is home to some 12,000 students from regional areas who attend the University of Canberra or Australian National University.

The city centre is safe, clean and well connected by public transport (including bus services). There are also plenty of parks and green spaces to relax with friends after work or school. The nightlife in this part of Australia isn’t as lively as that found elsewhere, but some excellent restaurants and bars are within easy reach.

Conclusion
So, if you’re considering moving to Canberra city centre, we recommend it! However, there are a few things to keep in mind. It can be quite cold in winter, and parking prices can be high. But overall, it’s a great place for foodies and people who like to get out into nature – just make sure you don't forget your coat.
