Staying fit while exploring new countries

With a contentious approach, you can stay fit while enjoying every moment of your travels.

When you are travelling to new countries, it can be difficult to stay fit and to maintain your weight. Without a normal daily schedule, it can be very difficult to find the time to squeeze in a workout and before you know it you’re not feeling very fit or healthy. Travelling, however, can be as healthy or unhealthy an experience as you want it to be. The key is to work exercise into the activities you do to ensure you stay fit and healthy when you’re on the road.

Whether you choose to rent bikes to explore the area you are visiting or you choose to embark on an epic multi-day hike, there are loads of things that you can do to keep fit when you’re travelling. While there are some great fitness apps that can help you to keep fit without using any gym equipment, it’s always better to get out and engage with your surroundings. Working your exercise into your travels is easy with the right approach.

Let’s take a look at just a few ways that you can stay fit when you’re out exploring new countries and destinations.

Go for a hike
Hiking is a great calorie burner and is a fantastic way to get out in the outdoors and witness the natural beauty of where you are travelling up close. In some countries, like Nepal for example, the mountains are one of the main reasons for visiting and multi-day hikes like the Everest Base Camp Trek are a must for any itinerary. Whether you choose to embark on a big adventure or you go on a half-day hike in where you’re staying, getting out in the mountains is a great way to stay in shape.

Rent bikes
Many of the most iconic cities around the world have excellent cycle networks that make getting around a breeze. Renting a bike to explore your destination, instead of relying on taxis, will not only save you money but it will keep you fit too. What’s more, cycling allows you to move slower through the area and really soak up the sights, sounds and smells of where you are visiting.

Go kayaking
Whether you’ve been kayaking before or not, kayaking is a fantastic workout and a great way to keep those extra calories at bay. Getting out on the water allows you to experience the destination in a completely new way, giving you the opportunity to gain a unique perspective. Kayaks can usually be rented by the hour, for half a day or for a full day. Be sure to ask for a flotation device to keep you safe ion case you capsize and if you are new to kayaking, be sure to get some basic instruction before hitting the water.

Walk more
When you’re travelling, it can be easy to become lazy and jump in taxis whenever you need to get somewhere. Being in an unfamiliar place, you might not always realise that you could have safely walked the same distance. Opting to walk more when you are visiting a new place allows you the time to appreciate the finer details of where you are travelling. You will have more interactions with the locals, get to know your way around the area and burn some of those pesky pounds while you’re at it!

Make smart choices to stay in shape when travelling
Keeping fit when you’re travelling can be challenging but with a few smart choices, you can ensure that you stay in shape. Choose activities that are more physical to help you get a workout in, opt to walk instead of taxis and keep an eye on what you are eating and drinking. With a contentious approach, you can stay fit while enjoying every moment of your travels.
