Sunshine Coast fishing charters 101: Five things to know

You’re probably a tourist enjoying the great Sunshine Coast. With that said, it’s crucial that you pick a fishing charter that’s closely situated where you’re staying. It’s nonsensical to pick a fishing charter somewhere far from the resort or hotel that you’re staying.

Boasting of a large and elaborately equipped charter fishing fleet in Southern Queensland, fishing options are plentiful in Sunshine Coast.  With that said, it can be tough and overwhelming to choose a fishing charter service.

Not to worry though, we have come up with a quick and easy guide on the things to consider on your first Sunshine Coast Fishing Charter trip! Here are the things you should know:

1. Think location
You’re probably a tourist enjoying the great Sunshine Coast. With that said, it’s crucial that you pick a fishing charter that’s closely situated where you’re staying. It’s nonsensical to pick a fishing charter somewhere far from the resort or hotel that you’re staying.

Even if you found the best-priced trip from the other side of town, you need to know that charters usually leave early. It can be a hassle to catch them if you’re staying far.

2. Check the policies and amenities
When booking a charter trip, it’s important that you know the onboard policies. Most guides would allow you to bring drinks and snacks, but make sure to always ask. This is especially true if you want to light up a cigar or perhaps chill out with alcohol.

Longer fishing trips typically include drinks and snacks. Also, if you would like to receive extra services, then discuss them with your guide. Some companies can pick you up and drop you off where you’re staying for free. Others will charge an extra price.

This is the same for fish cleaning, filleting, gear, live bait, and licenses. Also, you can check if fuel is included in the price. Fuel costs can add up real quick, particularly if you’re fishing offshore. While most captains include fuel cost in their fishing price package, you’d want to double-check to save yourself from unpleasantly large bills.

Other than that, you also want to check any particular amenities you want. For instance, if you’re going on longer fishing trips and want the option to fish while relaxing in an air-conditioned cabin, then ask your guides. Do you frequently go to the bathroom? If you’re going on a deep sea fishing charter, you also want to consider if the boat offers sleeping quarters. Knowing the amenities provided can help you find a charter boat that best suits your needs.

3. Type of fishing
You need to know the kind of fishing that you want before choosing a charter. Do you prefer inshore or offshore? Do you want to experience night fishing or maybe reef fishing?

Also, you need to consider the kind of fish you want to catch. Certain fish species are around only in specific seasons. For instance, the prized Spanish mackerel abound during the warmer summer and autumn months. Meanwhile, red emperors and snappers are in season in the months of June to September.

Talk to your guide to set realistic expectations and avoid potential disappointments.

4. Private or shared?
Do you want to fish by yourself? Or do you want to share the experience with your family or friends? Maybe you want to meet new people on board.

Shared charters are the best if you don’t want to get bored and wait for a catch all alone. You get to meet new people with the same interest as you. Plus, they’re quite affordable.

Meanwhile, private charters are great if want to have the boat by yourself or with a close friend or family. This is suitable for those who don’t mind spending a little more.

5. Fishing hours
Hours for standard fishing charters in Sunshine Coast are half-day (4-5 hours), ¾ day (6 hours), full-day (8 hours), or maxi day (12 hours).

The half-day charter is most suitable for the starting fishers. Maxi day, on the other hand, is for the serious anglers and sometimes only available for exclusive boat hire.

In addition, there are some companies that also offer an overnight deep sea fishing charter or a multi-day charter. Take note that this kind of trip is available only at a specific time of the month, for instance, three to four days before or after the full moon.

Conclusion
The Sunshine Coast will definitely spoil you with numerous fishing options. Fishing charters entail a lot of things that you need to know and pay attention to. The above tips and considerations should help you get started and guide you to an unforgettable fishing experience.
