Ten tips for staying safe on your big US road trip

Here are some tips to help you to stay safe on your big US road trip.

A road trip across the USA is incredibly exciting and something that many people hope to do at some point in their lifetimes. It’s a great way to see more of the country, a chance to get to know yourself and your companions, and an opportunity to experience the journey, instead of just rushing from A to B. But while there are plenty of benefits to taking a big road trip like this, there are also some dangers to contend with, so it’s important that you make safety your priority. Here are some tips to help you to stay safe on your big US road trip.

Plan your route
One of the first and most important things that you should do is to plan your route. Planning will help you to make sure you stick to safe roads and areas and give you a chance to do some research so that you always know where to go if you need help, or if you are diverted along the way.

Check your vehicle
The last thing that you want is a serious car issue that leaves you stranded. Even if your car seems fine, you are going to be putting it under more strain than usual, so you head to a garage for a full service to make sure things like the tires, brakes, and lights are all working, and that the car can manage the trip.

Take a first aid course
Even basic first aid knowledge can make a big difference if something happens while you are in the middle of nowhere. Pack a first aid kit and take a short course so that you know what to do with it.

Pack emergency supplies
Unfortunately, you’ll never know exactly what is going to happen on your road trip. The unexpected is part of the fun, but also one of the biggest risks. You need to be prepared for everything. So, make sure you’ve got some emergency supplies like food and drinks, blankets, a way to protect yourself, maps, power banks, and flashlights.

Book stops
Booking a few stops along the way means that you always know there’s somewhere safe to stop and rest coming up, and you never have to risk stopping and booking into a motel in a questionable area. This is especially important if you are traveling alone.

Take regular breaks
One of the biggest dangers when you drive for long periods is falling asleep behind the wheel, or driving while you’re very sleepy and your reactions are dulled.

Be sure to take regular breaks, and make sure you always stop as soon as possible if you start to feel tired while driving.

Be cautious with strangers
Part of the fun of a road trip is getting to meet new people, and you should certainly talk to people and make friends when you can. But make sure you are cautious; don’t give new people too much information and trust your instincts.

Stay in touch with people at home
People at home are a great tool. Make sure you check in regularly, and that you tell them where you are, where you are heading, and when they can expect to hear from you again.

Budget for emergencies
Make sure you’ve got an emergency budget in case something comes up and you need to pay for car repairs, food, or a hotel for the night. This fund will give you options and help make sure you are never stuck.

Take care of yourself
Taking care of yourself will help you to stay fit, healthy, and alert and give you the best chance to enjoy your trip. Make sure you are eating well, staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and getting plenty of sleep.

Take some precautions, plan, and use your common sense and there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a safe and exhilarating road trip.
