Tips for travelling freelancers

Motivation to work can be especially difficult if you are travelling because you do not have a strict routine to fall back on and you will want to go out and have exploring. Try to maintain as much of a routine as you can and be strict with the time you put aside to work.

There are many reasons why someone might choose to freelance, one of which is that it enables you to travel. You can do freelancing work from anywhere (depending on your particular vocation) because you are your own boss. You are not restricted by having to go into an office and you can work your own hours from wherever you want. If you are considering making the move to freelance work so you can travel, here are some tips to help get you started.

Stay on top of invoicing
As a freelancer, you are the one in charge of making sure you get paid. There are no more monthly wages being automatically paid into your account on a regular basis – you need to issue invoices for the work that you do and monitor when they are paid. Your invoicing should be just as professional as it would be coming from a larger company. To ensure this get an invoice template to make sure that what you are sending to your clients looks legitimate and high-quality. You should also keep detailed records of when you have issued these invoices, when they are paid and whether they have had to be re-issued. Find some quality financial software if you find it difficult to maintain such records yourself.

Follow your clients time zone
Technically you can do your work whenever you like, as long as you meet all the necessary deadlines but if you need to be in contact with your clients or any collaborators then you should keep to normal working hours – try to avoid sending emails with a timestamp of 2 or 3am. If you are travelling abroad, you may find that you are in a completely different time zone from your client, meaning that you will have to keep some pretty odd hours. Something that many travelling workers do is set aside some days when they are “on-call” and can be contacted during work hours on these days.

Stay motivated
Working remotely or doing freelance work can be a struggle with regard to staying motivated. We are all guilty of procrastinating from time to time but when you work for yourself, procrastination can escalate into a much bigger problem. You do not have colleagues or a boss to watch over you during work hours and check in on your progress so you may find that you end up leaving more and more until the last minute.

Motivation to work can be especially difficult if you are travelling because you do not have a strict routine to fall back on and you will want to go out and have exploring. Try to maintain as much of a routine as you can and be strict with the time you put aside to work. Work from the beach or a lakeside café, anywhere that you can still work without feeling as though you are missing out on anything. You could also try to find co-working spaces near to where you are staying to help give you the feel of working in an office.
