Top things to do and see in Perth, Australia

Perth is an ideal location for an outdoor adventure, situated on the banks of the Swan River with a line of beautiful beaches close.

Perth is located in Western Australia and is one of the world's most isolated cities.

Perth offers plenty of things to see and do despite its seclusion.  Perth is an ideal location for an outdoor adventure, situated on the banks of the Swan River with a line of beautiful beaches close. All kinds of water sports are popular in Perth, helped by the fact it has more sunshine than any other city in Australia.

1. At Kings Park & Botanic Garden, you may take a stroll through the treetops
Kings Park, a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, is one of the world's largest urban parks.  The park contains the Western Australian Botanic Garden, which has over 3,000 species of the region's unique flora.

The Lottery West Federation Walkway is one of Kings Park's most popular attractions. The 620-meter-long walkway is suspended from a canopy of eucalyptus trees in the Western Australian Botanical Gardens, providing fantastic views of the city.  If you want an even more spectacular view, climb the spiral staircase of the DNA Tower to reach the highest point of Kings Park, where you can see all the way to the Indian Ocean.

As well as providing walking routes, a gallery, cafes, water features and playgrounds for kids of all ages, conservation is a vital part of Kings Park, with over 60% of the park protected as bushland.

2. Take a river cruise on the swan river
The Swan River is ideal for outdoor recreation and water sports for everyone.  Sailing, swimming, fishing, and boating are all popular, as well as sun-bathing and picnicking. If you'd prefer to stay dry, you can take a stroll in one of several riverside parks or go for a bike ride, hike, or skate along one of the many paths.

Taking a trip on the river is always fun.  You can take a look at some of the wealthy riverfront homes as you cruise by or have a day trip to West Australia's oldest grape-growing area.  Barrack Square Jetty is where the majority of ferries and river excursions depart.

3. Relax on Perth's Beaches
Perth has plenty of sandy beaches to choose from, no matter what you prefer.  The best way to see them is to hire a car with plenty of boot space so you can pack in everything you need and visit a different beach every day.

Cottesloe is the most popular beach as it’s within easy reach of the city, although City Beach is challenging it for popularity.

Families head for sheltered beaches such as Waterman’s Bay, Hillarys Boat Harbour, and Rockingham Beach.

Mettams Pool and Coogee Beach have great snorkeling, including a shipwreck.  Scarborough Beach attracts tourists with its wide range of facilities, such as a skate park, a sunset market, and lots of bars and cafes.

4. Be dazzled by gold at the Perth Mint
Dating back to 1899, Perth’s Mint is one of the oldest in the world.  Although it is still a working mint, it also provides tours and has several attractions worth visiting.

You can watch gold being heated until molten and then poured in the traditional way to make a gold bar.  There is an exhibition that includes some of the largest and most valuable nuggets in the world, such as the gold King Henry, the gold Normandy Nugget, and the silver Karratha Queen.

Other fun things to experience are seeing the world’s largest gold bullion coin, trying to lift a gold bar, seeing how much you weigh in gold, and engraving medallions to take away as a souvenir.

5. Take the ferry to Penguin Island
Penguin Island would be worth the ferry ride just for its natural beauty.  Looking like a perfect fantasy island, it has crystal, clear waters and white sandy beaches, perfect for all seaside activities, from sandcastles to snorkeling.

However, the biggest attraction of Penguin Island is its wildlife. As you might expect from the name, you can find Australia’s biggest colony of little penguins, technically known as Eudyptula minor. You can see rescued little penguins at the viewing facility that could not be rehabilitated into the wild, including watching them swim underwater.  The rangers can take you on a guided tour of the island, and you can watch them feed the penguins three times a day.

As well as penguins, over 30 different species of birds have been spotted on the island. You can also swim with wild dolphins and kayak with rare Australian sea lions.

Only a 15-minute ferry ride from Perth, visiting Penguin Island will be a highlight of your trip to Perth.

6. Get to know the animals at Perth Zoo
Just five minutes from the city center, you can find Perth Zoo, a firm family favorite since it opened in 1898. International visitors especially enjoy seeing all the unique Australian animals gathered in one place, such as kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, dingoes, koalas, and Tasmanian devils.

The main exhibits of the zoo are housed in a number of different geographical zones. The Australian Walkabout zone has several rarer Australian species that the zoo is working to help protect as well as the traditional favorites. In the Asian Rainforest zone, you can find elephants, red pandas, tigers, komodo dragons, and orangutans.  You can see lions, zebras, rhinos, and giraffes in the African Savannah. Other areas include the Main Lake, a Primate Trail, and areas displaying birds and reptiles.

As well as the animals, Perth Zoo offers a historic carousel, interactive displays, and a children's playground. There are plenty of informative walks and exhibitions on offer, and you can also book a behind-the-scenes experience where you can get close to the animals and even help feed them.

Easily accessible by public transport, don’t miss out on meeting the animals in Perth Zoo.

Conclusion
A unique and exciting city, Perth offers a wide variety of attractions to visit. Perth is set in a beautiful yet isolated area, with the urban areas closely tied into the stunning natural surroundings, giving the visitor a choice of all kinds of entertainment.
