Top wine tasting destinations

Whichever your preference, there’s bound to be a wine-tasting tour to suit you, which is why we have the pick of the bunch, right here.

Whether you’re a connoisseur or just starting out, sipping a local wine in the very location it was made is a wonderful experience. Wine tasting trips, trails and other events take place worldwide, with plenty of locales to choose from. You can opt for a traditional vineyard visit, or combine your wine tasting experience with a scenic trek. Whichever your preference, there’s bound to be a wine-tasting tour to suit you, which is why we have the pick of the bunch, right here.

Australia
Aussie wine is some of the best there is. Sip a cabernet sauvignon in Mclaren Vale (40 minutes from central Adelaide and close by to some beautiful beaches), or why not visit Tastes of the Hunter Wine Tours, a calm haven away from the bustling metropolis of Sydney.

America
With over 400 wineries in Napa County (and a further 200 in nearby Sonoma), California will leave you spoiled for choice, as will their range of fruity, full bodied wines. The region is also famous for its gourmet dishes, so why not experience both on the Napa Valley wine train: a vintage locomotive and traveling restaurant all in one.

France
France is renowned for its wine, and with good reason. For the ultimate Gallic wine experience, travel to scenic Bordeaux, where you can find 6000 vineyards producing 9000 varieties. It's also a great place for avid cyclists, but if you prefer the slow route, you can simply take in the magical scenery while sipping a Château Margaux. Formidable.

Italy
Walking into the vineyards of Tuscany, with their rolling hills and towering cypress trees, is like stepping into a painting, which is apt, given the region’s artistic heritage as the birthplace of the Renaissance era. Located in central Italy along the Tryrrhenian coast, the region’s wines are largely made from the Sangiovese grape used in its classic wines: Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Chianti.

Portugal
As one of the largest wine-growing regions in Portugal with charming villages and gorgeous coastal scenery, Alentejo is a must-see destination for any avid oenophile, and for breadth of experience, The Douro Valley is also hard to beat: traditional landholders have been making wine there for over 2,000 years.

Greece
The wines of Santorini owe their unique taste to the microclimate and volcanic soils of the region, where alongside the classic blue and whitewashed buildings, you’ll find blue seas and skies to match. Good food also pairs well with great wine, so don’t forget to sample some of the local cuisine.

Bulgaria
Another must-see destination for wine-lovers and foodies alike is Plovdiv in the Valley of the Maritsa River. With a great combination of high end restaurants and hidden local gems, the region is the perfect place to go exploring, both in terms of taste and travel.

This is only a shortlist – there are many more places where good food, great wine and gorgeous scenery can be enjoyed. For wine lovers, foodies and travel enthusiasts alike, no truer words were ever spoken – and if you’re planning your next vacation, a wine tour could be just the thing to re-awaken your senses and refresh the palate.
