With 2002 designated as International Year of Ecotourism World Travel Market’s eighth Environmental Awareness Day has particular significance.

Taking place on Wednesday 13 November, ExCeL, London, the day has the support of WWF, ABTA, UNEP and Green Globe 21.

The day commences with the highly popular and always well attended debate on the Central Feature Area. To be sponsored for the second year by WWF, the global environment network, the debate Destination Sustainability will be hosted by TV broadcaster and journalist John Stapleton who made such an impact on the proceedings last year.

Jo Wheeler, WWF commenting on the continued sponsorship of the debate said: WWF are playing a major role in raising environmental issues that are of paramount importance to the travel and tourism industry. World Travel Market gives us an ideal forum to highlight these issues.

The debate will be preceded at 10.30 by the World Travel Market Environmental Recognition Awards presented in recognition of an outstanding environment project or activity.

The afternoon’s proceedings include a UNEP/Tour Operators Initiative workshop Sustainable Tourism: Your Future – The Business Perspective from 13.30 to 14.30 and a mini conference organised by Green Globe 21 – Organic Agritourism and Rural Ecotourism from 15.30 – 17.00. Both sessions take place in City Side Room 7.

Furthermore the WTTC will be presenting Corporate and Social Responsibility from 14.30 – 15.30 in City Side Room 15.

Commenting on the day Group Exhibition Director Fiona Jeffery said: It is a day of diversity; an opportunity for those who have not as yet embraced the issues to do so and to recognize the effect and impact they potentially have on their business.

We are delighted that, for the first time, we have the official support of four major players who are totally committed to developing a balanced and responsible tourism sector.
