11 Howard bringing new-Nordic to New York

Located in the city’s achingly chic SoHo district, this Design Hotels member embodies an authentic vision of a community hub through collaborations with contemporary artists and meaningful partnerships with local businesses and non-profit organizations.

BERLIN – Opening March 2016, 11 Howard is set to take on New York’s hotel scene with its unique blend of cutting-edge Scandinavian design and socially-conscious hyper-localism. Located in the city’s achingly chic SoHo district, this Design Hotels member embodies an authentic vision of a community hub through collaborations with contemporary artists and meaningful partnerships with local businesses and non-profit organizations. Throw in a culinary concept from restaurateur-extraordinaire Stephen Starr and dynamic co-working space, the 11H Collective, and you have Manhattan’s most eagerly-awaited new downtown haunt.

Original Aby Rosen’s reputation as an innovator within Manhattan’s hotel landscape was established with the launch of Gramercy Park Hotel, and is cemented with the conception of 11 Howard. Defined by a unique brand of “conscious hospitality”, Rosen envisaged 11 Howard as an antidote to SoHo’s increasingly cookie-cutter mentality. Entrusted with realizing this vision are Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard of Danish design studio Space Copenhagen, who have collaborated with Anda Andrei to create the sleek aesthetics of the 221-room hotel. “We have commissioned designers from Denmark renowned for defying habits and employing a sincere personal vision to their design,” says real estate mogul and art collector Rosen. 11 Howard’s aesthetics are informed by the design studio’s signature new-Nordic minimalism, featuring custom lighting and furnishings by Mads Raaschou and Gubi. All rooms have beautiful high ceilings and windows that allow for an abundance of natural light, with a material palette of subtly-hued variations of wood, warm metals, velvet, and wool, that will grow in character as it ages.

The resulting space will embody a seamless experience for hotel guests and a cultural hub for the artistically-minded neighborhood. 11 Howard’s community consciousness is strengthened by collaborations with young, contemporary artists such as Katie Yang, Dan Attoe and Hiroshi Sugimoto, while its involvement with the likes of Global Poverty Project and Conscious Commerce represents a desire to give back to the neighborhood and to the world.
