£11m Premier Inn on the Clyde opens early creating 65 new jobs

Located next to the BBC and STV Headquarters and opposite the Hydro Arena and SECC, linked by the recently refurbished Bells Bridge, the hotel has been built using the best-performing green technologies.

UK’s hotel chain, Premier Inn, has pulled out all the stops to open its £11m Pacific Quay site, the 6th hotel in the centre of Glasgow, ahead of schedule in June in time for the Commonwealth Games, creating 65 new full and part time jobs for the city.

The jobs, including four apprenticeships, range from receptionists and restaurant staff to housekeeping and maintenance at the contemporary six-storey, 180-bedroom hotel and restaurant, which sits on a three-acre site on the south side of the River Clyde.

Located next to the BBC and STV Headquarters and opposite the Hydro Arena and SECC, linked by the recently refurbished Bells Bridge, the hotel has been built using the best-performing green technologies. These include the heating and cooling system being provided through an air source heat pump to reduce carbon emission and the installation of a rain water harvest recycling system.

High insulated windows to reduce cooling requirements have also been installed, resulting in energy consumption and demand on resources being significantly reduced, which is part of the company’s Good Together CSR Campaign to ensure that new hotels are built to the highest sustainable standards in the industry.

The bedrooms will feature the company’s latest high-spec, modern design with half of the rooms looking onto the Clyde and with stunning views over the city.

The 180-seater river facing Thyme Restaurant will be the company’s largest in Scotland and boast an additional 20-seater external terraced area. Two glass-to-ceiling meeting rooms facing the Clyde, self-service check-in facilities, free car parking and sheltered cycle parking will also be available at the new hotel.

Barry Halfpenny, Premier Inn Glasgow City Cluster General Manager, said: “Opening in time for the Games has been our aim since plans were first approved for the site which everyone involved in the project has worked tirelessly to make happen.

“The hotel is in a fantastic location with incredible views both of the city and along the river which we are confident not only business and leisure travellers will be impressed with but locals too.”

Once opened, the Pacific Quay hotel will take the number of Premier Inn bedrooms to over 1000 in the city centre of Glasgow, which includes George Square, Charing Cross, Buchanan Galleries. Argyle Street and City Centre South.

Pacific Quay is one of three hotels being opened in Scotland over a 12 month period; Stirling opened in October last year and Perth is due to open in the summer, which is part of  Premier Inn’s expansion project that will see the company extend its current number of bedrooms UK-wide from 49,000 to 65,000 by 2016.
