28 hotels receive certification for meeting national standards

This addition of 28 accommodation facilities brings to 40 the number of properties in Grenada that are currently certified. The process continues where other properties are being engaged to make the necessary upgrades.

GRENADA – Twenty-eight (28) of Grenada’s eighty-four (84) registered accommodation establishments received certification for their compliance with a range of tourism industry standards applicable for the assessment, licensing and registration of the accommodation sector ordinance. The ceremony during which this was done, was convened at the conference room of the Grenada Bureau of Standards, which is one of the agencies involved in collaborative work to decide on those that would have reached the acceptable standards for such certification. The other organizations involved are headed by the Grenada Board of Tourism, and include the Ministry of Health, the Physical Planning Unit of the Ministry of Communication and Works, and the Fire Department of Royal Grenada Police Force.

In providing an overview of the entire process during the ceremony, Director of the Grenada Bureau of Standards Mr. Simeon Collins explained how the various stages are dealt with so that internationally acceptable standards are introduced to the tourism product in a manner that does not jeopardize the competitiveness of the Grenada tourism industry.
 
In congratulating the hoteliers for their achievement, Minister of Tourism Hon: Alexandra Otway Noel emphasized the value and importance of adopting initiatives that will make Grenada more competitive. She specifically challenged the industry stakeholders to seek ways to make their investments user-friendly to both the mental and physically challenged people, so that they too can access all amenities and facilities on offer.
 
The certificates were distributed to the various property representatives by both the Minister of Tourism and the Parliamentary Secretary in the said Ministry – Senator Brenda Hood. Other speakers at the ceremony included Head of Product Development and Customer Services at the Grenada Board of Tourism Mrs. Nikoyan Roberts, and Mr. Leonard St. Bernard – Head of the Laboratory Services Division of the Grenada Bureau of Standards. Mr. Richard Feld of the Villa Beach Cliff spoke on behalf of the other hoteliers, while the invocation was done by Arch Deacon Christian Glasgow.
