Americans strongly support short-term rentals

Short term rental advocacy center poll finds one in five American families plan to use a short-term rental this summer, overwhelming majority says rentals bring meaningful benefits to communities.

WASHINGTON – As many families prepare for summer vacations this summer, a new poll from the Short Term Rental Advocacy Center found one in five American families plan to rent short-term this summer, and that Americans resoundingly support short-term rentals and clearly understand the benefits they bring to communities.

The online poll of consumer attitudes on short-term rentals and regulations found short-term rentals are popular, with 28 percent of respondents saying they or a family member have used a short-term rental in the past two years and 20 percent saying they or a family member plan to do so this July and August during their summer vacation, typically a very busy time of year for short-term rentals.

The poll revealed 40 percent of respondents are attracted to the space and amenities of short-term rentals and the ability to bring their families. Thirty-one percent said they like the affordability of short-term rentals and to a lesser extent the ability to cook meals (19 percent) and ability to live like a local in different neighborhoods (11 percent).

The poll also found 90 percent of respondents strongly or somewhat agree that short-term rentals bring meaningful tourism and tax dollars to local communities across the country, and 84 percent strongly or somewhat agree that families should be free to occasionally rent their homes short-term, which was defined as a vacation rental of less than 30 days.

“Americans strongly support short-term rentals and clearly understand the tangible benefits they bring to homeowners, residents, travelers, businesses and local communities across the country,” said STRAC spokesman Tim Doyle.

Americans also strongly support a balanced regulatory approach to short-term rentals. Of those polled, 69 percent strongly or somewhat oppose communities passing rules and laws that restrict the practice of short-term renting. Conversely, 75 percent strongly or somewhat support fair and reasonable short-term rental regulations.

“This poll resoundingly finds Americans prefer a fair and reasonable approach to regulating short-term rentals,” Doyle added. “We are encouraged by these results and hope local and state governments take note as they create and modify short-term rental regulations.”

Research Now, an independent research company, conducted the online survey on behalf of the Short Term Rental Advocacy Center. The interviews were conducted from June 17 to June 19 from a nationally representative sample of 1,243 respondents age 18 and older. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the margin of error is +/-3 percentage points. The data was weighted to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the actual U.S. population according to U.S. Census figures. In addition to sample error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into findings of public opinion polls.
